OSSD

The courses leading to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) have been developed according to the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Education. At UTS, they are offered at the Academic, Open, and College, University or University/College Preparation levels, and are taught in an enriched manner, which focuses on the development of academic skills to prepare students for entry to post-secondary education in colleges and universities.

OSSD requires:

  • earn 18 compulsory credits
  • earn 12 optional credits (minimum)
  • complete 40 hours of community involvement activities
  • pass OSS Literacy Test

Compulsory Credits are:

  • 4 English credits (1 credit per grade)
  • 1 French credit, as second language
  • 3 Math credits
  • 2 Science credits
  • 1 Canadian History credit
  • 1 Canadian Geography credit
  • 1 Arts Credit
  • 1 Physical Education and Health credit
  • ½ Civics Credit
  • ½ Career Studies credit

Plus:

  • 1 credit in English, or a third language or a Social Science and the Humanities, or Canadian and World Studies, or Guidance and Career Education, or Cooperative Education*
  • 1 credit in Physical Education and Health, or Music, or Art, or Business Studies, or Cooperative Education*
  • 1 credit in Science (grade 11 or 12) or Technological Education (grades 9-12), or Cooperative Education*

*a maximum of 2 credits in Cooperative Education can count as Compulsory Credits

Optional Credits can be earned and selected from a full list of courses available in the school. These choices allow the student to tailor his/her education to suit their individual interests as well as meet university and career requirements.

In addition UTS students may be eligible to earn a UTS diploma which is granted by the University of Toronto.
